FloodingA significant consequence of global warming which many people will face in the future is flooding. This is a very important problem because it could threaten many people's lives in lowland areas of the world such as Holland and Bangladesh. Plus, it all started because the temperature of the atmosphere increased meaning that glaciers and ice sheets melted (and are melting even more), increasing the sea level causing areas to become flooded. For example, Yorkshire has endured heavy flash floods, which were unpredictable since Yorkshire is not common for flooding. I think that the main cause for this is global warming since it was unexpected and a rare occurance- global warming causes unpredictable weather patterns. The result is that a few people died and many houses of people were destroyed.

On a much larger scale, flash floods have been occurring on the coast of Bangladesh over the past 20 years and this is certainly caused by climate change. Each year, on average 18% of the country is flooded killing 5000 people and destroying 7 million homes. Global warming has caused a greater amount of rain to fall on Bangladesh since the weather patterns have changed, meaning that the areas around Bangladesh are receiving higher temperatures. This also causes there to be heavy storms (such as cyclones) which make the situation worse- for example,Cyclone Sidr causes 6000 deaths. Not to mention, the economy of Bangladesh is very unstable mainly due to global warming. Finally, the rise in sea level caused by global warming will affect the Netherlands in the future, according to many scientists. This is very simple for people to observe though. |
As you see in the above animation, the sea level is rising because ice in polar regions such as Antarctica is melting and continues to do so. If this continues to happen, the sea level will rise perhaps by about 2 meters by 2100 or so. Since most of the Netherlands is below 2 meters, it will become flooded with water.
